Converting a carpet roll cut to square yards
Carpet is cut from rolls of a fixed width. A cut's area is roll width × cut length. A 12-foot-wide cut that is 45 feet long is 540 SF, which is 60 SY. For a room you add each cut, including any partial width, so the ordered yardage is often more than the room's net area.
