Carpet Roll Width and Seam Planning

Roll width decides how many cuts a room needs and how much carpet is trimmed away. A 12-foot roll covers a 12-foot room in one width but needs two widths, and heavy trimming, for a 14-foot room. Seam rules, pile direction and pattern repeat add more. Planning seams before ordering often changes the yardage more than any waste percentage.

Roll width vs. room width

Room width12' roll13'6" roll15' roll
11'1 width, 1' trimmed1 width, 2'6" trimmed1 width, 4' trimmed
13'2 widths, 11' trimmed (unless used elsewhere)1 width, 6" trimmed1 width, 2' trimmed
14'2 widths, 10' trimmed2 widths, 13' trimmed1 width, 1' trimmed
24'2 widths, no trim2 widths, 3' trimmed2 widths, 6' trimmed

Trimmed material can sometimes fill other rooms or closets, which is exactly what a seam layout works out.

Seam rules that change quantities

  • Keep seams out of doorways and perpendicular to them where specified
  • Avoid seams in high-traffic lanes and under rolling loads
  • Run seams in the direction of the main light source where specified
  • Keep pile direction consistent across adjoining spaces
  • Match patterns at every seam, extending cuts to full repeats

Pattern repeat and waste

A carpet with a 36-inch length repeat may need up to 3 extra feet on each cut so the next piece lines up. In a building with hundreds of cuts, that adds up quickly. Width repeats also limit where side seams can fall. For custom hospitality carpet, see hotel flooring estimating.

Seam diagrams

A seam diagram records the plan: where each cut goes, its direction and where seams fall. It supports the bid, the order and the installer, and many specifications require one as a submittal. See our seam diagram and shop drawing deliverables.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard width of commercial carpet?

Most commercial broadloom is 12 feet wide. Some products are available 13'6" or 15' wide; check the manufacturer's data.

Where should carpet seams be placed?

Specifications commonly keep seams out of doorways and heavy traffic lanes, keep pile direction consistent and require pattern match. Follow the project specification and manufacturer guidelines.

How does pattern repeat affect carpet quantity?

Each cut must be extended so the pattern lines up with the next piece, so larger repeats mean more extra material on every cut.

Can carpet be ordered in custom roll lengths?

Broadloom is cut to length from rolls, and suppliers have their own ordering increments and minimums. The seam layout gives the cut lengths to request.

Why do carpet seams show more in some rooms?

Seams are more visible where light rakes across them, in high-traffic lanes and with some textures. Seam planning places them where they are least noticeable.
