Sports and Athletic Flooring Estimating
A sports flooring estimate measures the playing surface by system type, such as maple wood, poured urethane, rubber or turf, then adds the items that make athletic floors different: subfloor systems, perimeter vent base, thresholds, game lines and logos, and equipment inserts. Game lines and graphics are counted separately because they are priced by length or by item, not by area.
Common athletic flooring systems
| System | Where it is used | Key takeoff items |
|---|---|---|
| Maple hardwood | Gymnasiums, courts, dance and multipurpose rooms | Flooring SF, subfloor system SF, perimeter vent base LF, thresholds, finish coats |
| Poured urethane / synthetic | Multipurpose gyms, school courts | System SF, layers, perimeter details |
| Sports rubber | Fitness, weight rooms, multipurpose | Roll or tile SF, thickness, seams |
| Synthetic turf | Indoor training, fitness lanes | Turf SF, infill, seams, inlaid lines |
| Sport tile / modular courts | Pickleball and tennis, rec centers | Tile SF, edging, line striping |
Game lines, logos and inserts
Game lines are measured in linear feet by sport and color (basketball, volleyball, pickleball, futsal and so on), and center-court logos or wall-pad graphics are counted as items. Equipment sleeves and floor plates for volleyball posts or other equipment are counted per insert. Missing these from a bid is easy because they rarely appear on the finish plan; they are usually found in the specification or on separate sports striping drawings.
Pickleball and recreation projects
Pickleball courts, rec centers and workout clubs often combine several floors: sport tile or urethane courts, rubber in fitness zones, carpet tile in lobbies and LVT in common areas. A single takeoff that separates each system keeps the bid organized. See also rubber flooring estimating.
What a CFE sports flooring takeoff includes
- Playing surface SF by system and area
- Subfloor or underlayment systems where specified
- Perimeter vent base, thresholds and transitions in LF
- Game lines in LF by sport and color, plus logo and graphic counts
- Equipment insert counts
- Adjacent flooring in the same building, measured separately
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you estimate a wood gym floor?
Measure the playing surface and the subfloor system in square feet, the perimeter vent base and thresholds in linear feet, and count equipment inserts. Game lines and logos are measured separately from the floor itself.
How are basketball and pickleball game lines estimated?
Game lines are measured in linear feet for each sport and color, using the court layout drawings or standard court dimensions when specified. Logos and graphics are counted as separate items.
Do you estimate artificial turf for indoor facilities?
Yes. We measure turf area, inlaid lines and related items for indoor training areas and fitness facilities.
Can you estimate a full recreation center with mixed floors?
Yes. Courts, fitness rubber, carpet tile, LVT and wall base are measured in one takeoff with each system listed separately.
What is perimeter vent base on a gym floor?
Vent base is a wall base used around wood gym floors that lets air move under the floor and hides the expansion gap. It is measured in linear feet around the floor's perimeter.
How many game lines does a multipurpose gym need?
It depends on the sports specified. A gym striped for basketball, volleyball and pickleball has several line colors, each measured separately in linear feet from the striping drawings.
Need this takeoff done for your next bid?
Send your plans and specs. Most CFE takeoffs are completed within 24–48 business hours of receiving complete documents.
